Developing a Costume

There comes a time when you may want to start ‘dressing up' a bit for your classes, or when you want to develop a costume for a dance party (‘hafla') or performance.

A class costume can be as simple as a long flowing skirt and a crop top. Wearing a costume to class can help you feel like a dancer and help your movements to look more like your teacher's. Usually a practice costume is not as elaborate as a performance costume. As a general rule try not to wear any really noisy costume pieces (lots of jewellery, elaborate coins belts or anklets with bells). While these are part of performance costumes, if each student wears them to class, it can make it hard for other students to hear within a large class.

You can purchase pieces for suitable practice and performance costumes or purchase the raw materials and make your own. It is also useful to look at your wardrobe with an eye to what you can use or adapt for a costume. Second-hand shops can provide great items for modification. Talk to your teacher for more costuming tips and hints. She will probably know where you can purchase suitable items locally or can recommend mail order and web suppliers.

Arabian Nights Belly Dancing occasionally runs costuming workshops and has a very extensive costuming guide available.

Types of Costumes

The most common types of costumes used in Middle Eastern Dance are:

Cabaret

This consists of a bra and/or top, belt and skirt and/or harem pants. Often shiny materials, sequins and beaded fringing contribute to the glitz and glamour. High heels shoes may also be worn.

Beledi

This is a simple T shaped long dress, with slits up the sides. Harem pants may be worn underneath. A scarf or belt can be used to provide emphasis for hip movements.

Tribal

This is a melding of pieces from various Eastern places. Colors and materials are less 'glitzy ' than in the cabaret style. Turbans and a great deal of jewelry are used.

Antique

These are recreations of pre-19th century dance costumes. They are based on historic descriptions. Usually the entire body is covered.
